How to Keep Fall Allergies in Check

The cool, crisp weather of fall is arguably the most ideal kind of weather. However, it also causes allergies to start acting up. Fortunately, you can keep your allergies in check by making sure your HVAC unit is running smoothly.

Each HVAC unit has a set of filters that remove lint, dust and allergens from indoor air before they enter the air ducts. However, if the filters are clogged or the air ducts are dirty, dust and allergens will be recirculated throughout your house, causing allergy flare-ups.

So how can you keep your HVAC unit running efficiently?

Change your air filters every three months. Your HVAC system’s air filters should be replaced at least once every three months, or every month if you have pets. Since pet hair and dander can quickly clog air filters, you need to replace your filters more frequently if you keep pets indoors.

Have your air ducts cleaned. If your air ducts haven’t been cleaned in more than three years, you should schedule a cleaning. Over time, dirt and dust—and in some cases even mold—can accumulate in the ductwork.

Have your HVAC unit inspected at least once a year. As a general rule, you should have your HVAC unit inspected at least once a year. Through routine inspections, technicians can locate and fix underlying issues before they start affecting your HVAC system’s performance. For instance, if they notice a refrigerant leak, they can replace the damaged evaporator coil with a new Carrier® evaporator coil and replenish the refrigerant.

Install an air purifier. If you have allergies or asthma, you might want to consider getting an air purifier, especially given that indoor pollutant levels can be two to five times higher than the levels outside. By removing allergens circulating in your house, an air purifier can help keep your allergies in check.

If you’re considering installing an air purifier, be sure to do your research. Check air purifier and ductless air conditioner reviews before buying a new model. Here’s a tip: Look for air purifiers with high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters, which are highly effective at filtering out ultra-fine particles like mold and pollen.
