Inefficient air conditioners usually end up having shorter service lives and higher upkeep costs. While there are numerous lists about signs that indicate inefficiency, we at Albert Air Inc. would like to take the opposite tack and take a look at the signs that indicate an efficient air conditioner.
- Quiet operation. Your air conditioner should make nothing more than a continuous humming sound when in operation. From the indoors, all you should hear is a faint whooshing sound from the air handler. Noises like hissing, squealing or rattling indicate a problem that should be looked at by an HVAC professional.
- Consistent indoor temperatures. A properly functioning air conditioner should provide enough cooling throughout the house, without dramatic fluctuations in some areas. It’s important to note that drafts or warm spots may happen not because of the air conditioner, but because of factors like poor insulation and air leaks. HVAC technicians are able to identify these issues, but you’ll need an insulation or window contractor to ultimately fix them.
- Lower energy bills. If you’ve just replaced your old air conditioner with a more efficient model, you should see a noticeable decrease in your utility bills. This is especially noticeable if you’re keeping the same operational schedule as your old AC. Recent models are compatible with smart home systems, which can further improve your air conditioner’s efficiency with features like smart thermostats.
- No damp spaces. Cool air is a natural dehumidifier. This is why most air conditioners have a “dry” mode where it provides just enough cooling to reduce indoor humidity levels during relatively cool seasons. The ideal relative indoor humidity level is between 30% and 50%, and higher levels can cause problems like uncomfortably damp spaces and mold growth. When running at peak efficiency, your air conditioner should be able to eliminate damp areas in your home. In addition to keeping you comfortable and helping you save on energy bills, an efficient air conditioner helps maintain indoor air quality.
