Maintaining Your Gas Furnace

Yorba Linda Furnace Tune up

Serving Fullerton, Yorba Linda, Anahiem Hills, Placentia & Brea

Replace or clean the filter regularly. Make sure you have a properly sized filter in place. Dust and dirt can work their way into the blower and coil assemblies, reducing the furnace's operating efficiency and eventually causing damage to the motor. Heating professionals say simple dust and dirt are the cause of almost half of their service calls; most manufacturers recommend changing or cleaning filters at least every other month (once a month is best).

Confirm that the furnace comes on and turns off via your thermostat by setting the temperature higher than the current indoor temperature and setting the system to heating mode.

Check the temperature of your supply air grates to ensure you're able to feel warmth.

If you have an older thermostat, which could have liquid mercury switches, clean and level it to ensure proper functioning. Consider getting a digital thermostat that offers advanced features like 7-day programming, internet access, outdoor temperature and humidity monitoring, indoor humidity monitoring, touch screens, wireless access and more

Check all visible wiring and electrical connections for signs of damage like burns, unraveling wires and loose nuts.

Check your vent-connection pipe and chimney for rust or gaps - venting system parts can deteriorate over time.

At the start-up of your system each fall, an inspection of the burners, combustion area, venting and even flame appearance is advised. For gas furnaces, an inspection of the air intake and winterization is needed. Detailed instructions can be found in your owner's manual.

Whatever type of system you have, don't wait until it breaks down to call for service. A clean, well-adjusted heating system will save you money on fuel and prolong furnace life. Annual servicing is cheap especially when compared with the price of a new furnace.

A planned service checkup by a heating professional is usually a good idea. The technician will check the flues and temperature settings, examine the heat exchanger for cracks, and check the safety mechanisms on natural gas units. A $50-100 annual tune-up can reduce your heating unit's operating cost by three to four percent.
